Juke Joint is both a venue for dance music and a rockin' style of rhythm blues from the 50's. These venues in the south were usually intimate and were the place to be.
This frame is made from recycled wood flooring and glass from Cincinnati.

The Midnight Sun

Not only an awesome act of nature, The Midnight Sun is also an instrumental song originally written in 1947. It was adapted in 1957 with vocals by Ella Fitzgerald. She nailed it. Hear it here...
Unfortunately, this glass cracked when I got a lil handsy building the frame. (crack is pictured) But, not a problem for me cause I'll just keep it! Unless someone else digs it as much as I do, I can potentially make another.

Moon Glow - reused pallet wood frame

Moon Glow. The moon at night it very soothing to me. Something about the night glow, the quiet, and at this time of year...the crisp air...nothing is better.
I chopped up an old pallet to get this frame. Gives it character!

Street Fighting Man

I'll always be a Stones fan thanks to my dad. A few years ago I did a Rolling Stones window for him as a gift: Jumpin' Jack Flash. This time, I was diggin' on Street Fighting Man. As a scrappy kinda person and a fight fan, this was perfect. Enjoy!

Also, the painting was made from old repurposed glass and some killer wood flooring out of a Cincinnati school gym. Thanks to Rebuilding Greener in cincy for having the materials.

Circus, One of many to come

I have a deep love for vintage hand painted circus or sideshow banners. There is an antique warehouse that owns nearly 20 of them that hang in a gorgeous old warehouse. They are all quite large 10ft by 8ft or so. Some of my favorites include, Turtle Girl, The Fire Breather, Medusa, and Electra. Also of interest are circus prints from Barnum and Bailey's travelling circus. I've always wanted to own some of these posters but that day hasn't come yet. So, I decided to make some windows in the theme of the Circus. I hope to complete many more circus themed signs! Enjoy.

The Harmonica Shoppe

The Harmonica Shoppe? What kinda shop only sells harmonicas and what kinda shop spells it like shoppe? (pronounced, shaw-pee while sticking out your pinky finger over a cup of tea)

Well I don't know. But I think it looks great and the wind-ow is one of the oldest I've worked with. So I find it to be neat.

I have been thinking about old-timey musical instruments lately.
I'm always listenin' to music and recently enjoyed the sounds of new bluegrass, southern influenced, country songs. I've been hanging out with the audio representations of Steve Earle, The Carolina Chocolate Drops, The Heartless Bastards, Townes Van Zandt, and Justin Townes Earle...just to name a few.

Well, I figured I'd make a real old timey sign... something that doesn't include drinking this time!

Also, I've been dreamin' lately of getting a banjo, a trumpet even. But I may end up with an easier-on-the-pocket solution.. a harmonica.
We've had an unseasonably pleasant spring here in Chicago, maybe I'll sit around the fire tonight and play a tune.

Tell me, what's better than whiskey?

RYE Whiskey!

(Hey, take it easy, "Bourbon Whiskey" is coming. I am paintin' it right now.)

Anyway, rye whiskey goes very well with classic prohibition era cocktails such as a Manhattan.
Therefore, this long n' lean, unique, window gets the honor of showing off my favorite whiskey. Why, Beaner, what's your top ryes?
Well! Let's go through a few...

Starting with what's in my glass right now.. Bulleit, aged 4 to 7 years at 90 proof.

Sazerac! What a lovely font on that label... Aged  6 years and at 90 proof.

Next up we have Templeton, aged 5 years, 80 proof.

My favorite rye to order when I'm bellying up to the bar is Whistle Pig aged 10 years minimum, 100 proof, and with an attractive label. Best on the rocks or neat on a chilly winter night.

Rettig Tea Co. Commission for the Ho-liday

The Rettig Tea Company isn't an actually brand, tea just happens to be a common interest between the three family members this window was commissioned for. Rettig daughter, Clare asked me to whip up a lil somethin' before she visited some family in Indiana for the ho-liday.
So here we are..

     Well, here is another Waits wind-ow.
     From the album "Small Change" comes the song 'Bad Liver and a Broken Heart.'
     Aw, Tom had his heart broken. Poor fella.

     Mostly intriguing was the line from the song...

'And so I'll meet you at the bottom of a bottle of bargain scotch.'

     After much thinking and decoding I concluded that Mr. Tom was meeting his broken hearted ex lover at the bottom of such a bottle. And not just any ol' bottle but most likely DeWars. But then I though, he talks about a red label... "and I'll see your Red Label and I'll raise you one more" ...well that's none other than... good ol' Johnnie Walker!
